Things to do in and around Port Douglas

An enormous variety of tours and activities awaits you in Port Douglas. Apart from the lovely Four Mile Beach on the town's doorstep, there are all kinds of water-based activities on the Coral Sea, out on the Reef, and in the rivers and estuaries.

From Port Douglas' world-class marina take one of the many local diving or snorkelling cruises on the Reef. If you don't like water, there are glass-bottomed boats from which you can survey the spendours without even getting wet! The GBR is one of the natural wonders of the world and you haven't lived until you have seen the explosive colours and psychedelic array of fish and coral.

Whatever your desire, there's a reef or deepsea experience to suit you, even to the point of living aboard a dive boat and exploring the Outer Reef. The Daintree River Environmental Centre offers an excellent introduction to the rainforest via touchscreen displays and boardwalks.

Drive or take a tour along the Coral Coast to Daintree, Cape Tribulation, Noah Valley, Cooktown and the adjacent World Heritage rainforest. A variety of 4WD safaris and guided tours leave daily. As well as the coast, the reef and the rainforest, there is the legendary outback within reach of Port Douglas. Experience the total Australian adventure with a two- or three-day safari over the Great Dividing Range to the interior of north Queensland and see for yourself the wide, brown land of Australian folklore.

Bird and wildlife watchers will marvel at the extraordinary variety of Australian fauna. Even a short trip to Mossman Gorge will leave you gasping at the sheer beauty of this awesome landscape. For a different view, take a helicopter or hot-air balloon ride, or an evening cruise on the balmy waters. Or even try your luck with catching the big one: the blue marlin. How about a horse ride along the only beach in Australia fringed with rainforest? This part of Australia has it all in terms of tropical beauty and adventure activities.

Take care at all times when engaged in any activity and listen to the locals. Tropical Queensland has fierce sunshine and a wide-brimmed hat and highly-rated sunscreen should always be worn outdoors. Always swim between the flags on patrolled beaches and in protective enclosures during summer. While discovering the magic of the area don't forget the presence of saltwater crocodiles (which actually spend a lot of time in fresh water!), marine stingers in summer and the ubiquitous mosquitoes. Care in the water should especially be taken after heavy rain, due to rapidly changing conditions and swift currents. Be prepared, look for signs and listen to your guides.
